Just went through this with my 13-year old who is not a fan of dental work or getting vaccine shots. We've found it helpful to let her know well ahead of time when the appointment is so she can take some time to process, talk through her concerns and prepare what she might want to bring along. In many cases we've been able to pinpoint something specific that we can find a solution to, for example, fidget toys have been handy for the way to the appointment
