Memory Cafes are a growing trend in the world of caregiving, offering a unique venue for individuals with memory loss and their caregivers to meet, share experiences, and enjoy social interaction in a safe, welcoming environment. Mary Lou G. • I cared for my mom who had dementia for 16 yrs.

I have taken my mom to our local Memory Cafe. We had a great time! She had a virgin margarita since her medication prevented her from having alcohol (and I had a real one). We sat with another couple and had a chance to learn about their life and interests. Our Memory Cafe starts at 3:30 in the afternoon so we get Happy Hour prices for meals and drinks. The restaurant gives us a separate section so we don't have to deal with the restaurant's noise in the main section and bar. Mom and I enjoyed being out for the afternoon in a restaurant and socializing with others. She could tell her stories to people who hadn't heard them. If she got stuck telling the story, I could always give her a prompt to keep her going. Sometimes the story she'd told for years would change, and the new version became "the" story. These changes helped me analyze the progression of her dementia.
