When someone is acute crisis, often the best thing you can do is just show up with food, offer to take their kids off their hands for an afternoon, see if there is a discrete task you can take off their plate (like running to the pharmacy, researching something medical, getting some kind of craft project to keep their kids busy). When the acute moment has worn off, creating time and space for them to take care of themselves--exercise, go see a movie, have a drink with a friend--can be huge. And most of all, just try to tune into how they are experiencing it without putting a bunch of communication burden on them.
