This is a huge question, particularly when you are getting buried by caretaking responsibilities. I think it's all about ritual. It's too hard to plan connections in a one-off way. You have to figure out a mutually beneficial date/time, find a babysitter, alert aging parents...ALL THE THINGS. Instead it works better to say - every Saturday afternoon, we will go for a walk together, come hell or high water. Sometimes hell and high water do come, but at last half the time you'll do it because it was already on the calendar.
