My mother lost her license automatically when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The state of California mandates that physicians notify the DMV when someone is diagnosed with dementia. They require the individual to retest for vision, written, and driving. Mom barely passed the vision, but failed the written, and refused to accept that she could not drive anymore. The stripping of independence is very hard for many seniors. Add dementia into the mix and it gets more complicated. Taking the keys or disabling the car can help temporarily. The authorities would not let us remove the car from her house because it would be considered "stolen property" and we risked being arrested? No lie. More awareness is needed across the board.
