In the whirlwind of managing the care of both younger and older generations, caregivers often find themselves last on their own to-do lists. However, neglecting self-care can lead to burnout, affecting one's ability to provide care effectively. Here are some strategies for integrating self-care into the busy life of a caregiver:

  1. Prioritize Your Health: Regular check-ups, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep are foundational. It might seem basic, but these are often the first things to be neglected.

  2. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no, and recognize that you can't do everything for everyone. Setting clear boundaries allows you to manage your energy and commitments better.

Set aside time each day to collect your thoughts. Analyze how you’re reacting to situations. During your timeout, take deep breaths and relax. Stay focused and motivated with a positive attitude. Stephen

This question hits us all I think. I have been AWFUL with finding balance the past year. I go until my body crashes. But the past 2 months I've forced myself to take an hr each day for myself. That looks different every day. Sometimes it means I take a couple 10 minute breaks here and there and just stand somewhere by myself and breathe or read a couple pages on my Kindle other days I take a full hour and I just go walk the grocery store by myself for week. I'm sitting my car somewhere. The key for me has been to take that time not to make phone calls not to try to catch up on anything, but take the time and just allow myself time to do something.I enjoy or time to just relax. It's helped my mental health a ton.

Lordy, this is the ultimate sandwich clubber question! One obvious but critical answer is: actually enjoy the moments when you have them. The other day I had a tough morning with my mom crying and talking about her pain, and I was about to rush into work but realized I hadn't eaten yet and I needed a breath. I made myself some oatmeal, sat in the backyard, turned on a podcast and then turned it off because I realized what I really needed was silence, and just ate slowly and quietly, observing the natural world around me. Then I dove into work. If you have the flexibility to grab, even 10 quality minutes, DO IT. And don't scroll on your phone (unless that truly restores you). Eat, breath, drink water, connect with nature.
